Music. Family. Power. The Battle Begins is the tagline for FOX’s powerful new Hip Hop drama series Empire which premiered as the network’s highest-rated show in three years with over 9.8 million viewers tuning in. And they were not disappointed.
Music
As the show opens you find yourself being drawn into a music studio by a beautiful young girl belting out a love song “What is love? If you are not here with me, What is love? If it’s not guaranteed, What is love?’ We are subsequently introduced to music mogul Lucious Lyon who is not happy with the girls rendition of the song. Growing impatient with her performance he cuts the recording short, “I need you to sing like you are going to die tomorrow… Show me your soul in this music.” You can see the irritation in his artists face but she gives it another try. Still unhappy with her rendition, Lucious steps into the recording booth with her and reminds her of her of a painful time in her life he directs her to use that to fuel her passion for the song. The result is a soul-stirring rendition that almost brings you to tears.
But that was not the only moment where the music drew you into its clutches. A little later into the show we are introduced to Lyon’s younger sons Jamal and Hakeem. Jamal is a very talented singer, songwriter and composer while Hakeem is a very talented rapper. There are two scenes where the brothers bring their skills to give us amazing performances. The first is “Live inside the moment” where the brothers sing together at a party taking place on a yacht and the second takes place after Hakeem has a grueling recording session with his father. He seeks out his brother to help him come up with a better composition for the song, the result is a mega hit Lucious is proud of.
The fan favorite song is the song Jamal performs at a small club. “I give you all of me, but it still ain’t enough to make you happy… I’ll never be big enough to pay your dues but I keep trying.” During the song we are taken back to Jamal’s childhood, where he first realized Lucious did not approve of him.
Family
We all have complicated relationships with our family members, which makes the show relatable to its audience. Lucious is portrayed by Terrence Howard, he is a music mogul and father of three. During the show we see Lucious flashback to various moments at the doctor’s office which could only mean that he is hiding a big secret from his family.
Andre Lyon is the oldest son, while he is not an artist in the music business he has dedicated his life to Empire Records. He is married to Rhonda Lyon who tries to help her husband get a large piece of the Empire pie. Both characters are portrayed by Trai Byers from TV series 90210 and Kaitlin Doubleday from the film Final Sale respectively.
Jamal Lyon is the middle son. He is an extremely talented singer, songwriter and composer. He is shy and soft spoken. But much to Lucious’s chagrin he is gay and living with his partner. Jamal is portrayed by Jussie Smollett whom you may remember from the film The Mighty Ducks or the TV series On Our Own.
Hakeem Lyon is the youngest son. He is a very brash, entitled and spoiled boy. But he seems to be Lucious’s favorite as he is trying to walk in his father’s footsteps by becoming a rapper. Hakeem is portrayed by Bryshere Gray – this is Gray’s acting debut.
Cookie Lyon is the Ex-Wife and a convicted drug dealer recently paroled. Cookie served 17 years behind bars for selling drugs, the money that was instrumental with the start of Empire Records. Upon her release she heads home to take what she believes rightfully belongs to her. Cookie is portrayed by Taraji P. Henson who was recently in the film No Good Deed.
Power
During the show we learn that Lucious is hiding a very big secret from his family. A secret that leads him to inform his three sons that one of them will be groomed to take over Empire Records. After taking the company public he finds himself face to face with a new opposition that could topple his bid to be publicly traded on the stock exchange, that is the return of his ex-wife – Cookie- who knows where all the bodies are buried.
The Battle Begins
With the return of Cookie comes trouble that Lucious was not expecting. She wants a piece of Empire records and she will not go quietly into the night. The way she sees it she sacrificed everything for Lucious and his precious Empire, after all she did spend 17 years behind bars away from her sons for selling drugs to fund Lucious’s budding career.
Cookie just doesn’t want to be paid off, she wants half of the Empire pie and she’s willing to go to war to get it. Her first move is to gain leverage over Lucious and she does this with the help of her oldest son, Andre, who reminds her she has more ammo in her arsenal than she thinks. She threatens to leak the fact that it was her $400, 000 in drug money that funded Empire. In return for keeping quiet she wants to manage Jamal’s career.
Rhonda gives Andre the idea to pit war between the younger brothers in order to gain leverage for Empire. After all if Hakeem and Jamal go to war they may just tear each other apart leaving only one man left stand capable enough to take over for their father. Andre throws his plan into high gear by making sure Cookie fights for the right to manage Jamal’s career. Which would leave Lucious to focus on managing Hakeem’s career.
Jamal is struggling to gain his father’s approval and love, which Lucious is unwilling to give simply because his son is gay. His father feels that this lifestyle is a choice and he can at any point choose to be with women, he lets Jamal know that the African-American demographic is not receptive to a gay artist.
Hakeem and Jamal are quite close helping each other to succeed musically and personally. This is
especially true when Jamal recomposes a single Hakeem is struggling with. The result makes Lucious ecstatic praising Hakeem for being a musical genius. Although Hakeem tries to tell his father that Jamal was the composer, he completely ignores that fact and continues to praise Hakeem. This leads Jamal to accept Cookie’s offer of management.
And so the war begins.

FIRST OFF, let me say how much I respect the art and work ethic of Lee Daniels! I should be considered for a part in Empire for many reasons! One reason is because I TRULY feel that this show is somewhat similar to my life. I grew being homosexual as well so I definitely can relate to Mr. Daniels and the dialogue. I believe life is a series of being galvanized. So I continue to get stronger! I am DETERMINED to have a script in this show. I personally walked up to Lee Daniel’s and told him that I WILL one day be one of his actors and that he will see me in the future! He smiled and asked my name. Its set in stone!
